The responsibilities and activities of the Ministry of Education and Sport relate to:  

• education of pre-school children;
• the position and social protection of children, young people and adults in pre-school institutions, elementary schools (basic education), music schools, secondary schools and adult education institutions;
• the field of higher vocational education (other higher education is the responsibility of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology;
• halls of residence for schoolchildren and students of upper secondary education and vocational colleges;
• the education of the Italian and Hungarian minorities, as well as of the Romany people;
• the education of the Slovene minorities in Italy, Austria and Hungary;
• supplementary lessons in Slovene language and culture for Slovenes living abroad;
• physical education and recreational sport;
• preventive and corrective sporting activities;
• selective and competitive sport;
• the preparation of systematic and other solutions to problems in these areas;
• preparation of the national programme and the public services programme;
• determination of the financial criteria for public services;
• the setting up a register of fixed assets and preparation of a programme of investment and maintenance;
• the establishment of an information system in the areas of education and sport;
• the creation of personnel documentation and the education of personnel working in education; and promotion to different academic positions.

Directorate for Sport is responsible for:

• monitoring and studying sports problems and assessing the actual situation in sport, 
• participation in the preparation of new system issues, legislative and other regulations, 
• preparation of National Programme and its evaluation and implementation, 
• preparations of standards and principles, 
• sport for children and youth, recreation, sport of disabled, high performance and top sport, 
• international cooperation through bilateral and multilateral agreements and conventions and intergovernmental cooperation in sport, 
• big international sport events, 
• giving instructions and advice to public sports institutes, associations, clubs and other organisations, 
• direct implementation of legislation and other regulations, 
  co-financing of investments in sports infrastructure, 
• awards in sport.
